“LOOKIN’ GOOD” Image Enhancement Series

Children are our greatest assets and the richest resource for a nation’s survival. They must be nurtured, protected, guided and reinforced with knowledge, skills and creating in coping with the hills and valleys of survival mechanisms in home, school, and community. Teaching responsibility and self-control raises self-esteem.
Self-esteem is the package of beliefs about ourselves that we carry around in our hearts and in our heads. When self-esteem is high, we value ourselves and are armed with the confidence and zest for lift that we need to be happy and productive. When it is low, we don’t feel good about ourselves. We tend to downplay our strengths and magnify our faults. Sometimes we may not feel good about our lives. We can even be somewhat happy, but hate our looks. The secret to looking good is to develop confidence in oneself, have a positive body image in which we learn to play on our genuine strengths, not on real or imagined shortcomings. We must know ourselves in order to accentuate their positive. We are all different. There are no shortcuts to high self-esteem, but there are strategies that can help us learn to cherish, honor and believe in ourselves.
